Colin Jones – The Who Collection

Colin Jones - The Who Collection

Born in 1936, Colin bought his first camera, a Leica IIIc, whilst on tour with the Royal Ballet Touring Company after taking inspiration from the Hungarian photographer Michael Peto, under whose mentorship started taking photographs of the dancers and backstage life of the Royal Ballet. Colin honed his new skills as he toured with the ballet company, avidly taking photographs of the new scenes exposed to him by his travels. In 1962, Colin became a photographer for The Observer newspaper, which commissioned him to photograph various assignments across the world. In 1966, Colin followed The Who as they started their career playing in clubs and music halls, taking pictures of the band in their early performances as well as candid shots of the band as they went about their daily routines. From 1973-1976, Colin photographed what was arguably his most controversial work, documenting the hostel on Holloway Road that became known simply as The Black House. The work was originally displayed at The Photographers Gallery and more recently at the Tate Britain and the Michael Hoppen Gallery.

An exhibition of works from The Who collection is currently on display at Barclays Bank 15-17 Tottenham Court Rd, London W1T 1BH
